- भारत का सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान भारत रत्न (Bharat Ratn ) जो कि 1954 से शुरू किया गया है।
- पहली बार भारत रत्न सी राजगोपालाचारी, सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णनन और सी वी रमन को दिया गया था।
- लाल बहादुर शास्त्री जी को पहली मरणोपरांत भारत रत्न दिया गया था
- सचिन तेंदुलकर सबसे कम उम्र के भारत रत्न पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने वाले हैं उन्हें 2014 में ही भारत रत्न प्रदान किया गया था।
- अभी मदन मोहन मालवीय और अटल बिहारी वाजपेई को भारत रत्न प्रदान किया गया।
- पकिस्तान के खान अब्दुल गफ्फार खान और नेल्सन मंडेला ही ऐसे गैर भारतीय हैं जिन्हे भारत रत्न पुरस्कार मिला है
